“What happens to me if you die?”

I smacked my lips on the peach lip gloss I’d just applied and capped the top. “That’s dark.”

“You’re dating a vampire,” Noel said. “Certain death is imminent.”

He was standing in the doorway, arms crossed, leaning a shoulder against the frame. On a scale of belligerent to concerned, his attitude leaned to the left. Whatever was souring his mood, it wasn’t the prospect of my imminent demise.

“I’m not dating a vampire,” I said. “I’m going on a date with a vampire. One date. There’s a difference.”

“It only takes one slip of the fangs.”

I turned to face him, hands on my hips. “Is this going to be a problem?”

“My concerns are valid.”

“Because Kain is a vampire?” My brow arched. “Or because he’s a man?”

This tightness around his mouth loosened. “Would you be open to dating women?”

“Sure, if I rolled that way, which I don’t. Noel, I get it.” I really did. “It’s never easy watching someone you once loved dip their toes back into the dating pool. And it sucks—” for both of us “—that circumstances mean you have a front row seat. But I have to move on with my life.”

His bottom lip pulled tight again. “Because I’m dead?”

Good grief! “Because we’ve been divorced for over a year. I’m not a grieving widow, Noel, I’m a discarded wife.”

“Krissie…” He pushed away from the door and came toward me. “I made a mistake. I never discarded you. If that’s how you feel, you are so, so wrong.”

I put a hand up to hold him off. “You slept with Cynthia and broke up our marriage. I’ve forgiven you, but you don’t get to tell me how I feel. Now, if you don’t mind, I’d appreciate some privacy to finish getting ready.”

Noel backed up.

“More.” I flapped a hand at him until he’d retreated across the threshold, then I flicked magic into my fingers to slam the bedroom door in his face.

Ruthless over-stepping called for brutal measures. The sooner Noel learned that my dating life was off-limits, the better for all of us.

I turned back to the mirror, pulling my fingers through my hair. Kain hadn’t mentioned where he was taking me for dinner, so I’d opted for high heels, black jeans and a knitted off-the-shoulder top. That should cover all bases.

Kain arrived at seven on the dot, driving a sleek BMW Coupe. He’d dressed down in tailored pants and a silk shirt unbuttoned at the collar. Loose waves of dark brown hair cuffed his jawline. Casual elegance looked smoking hot on him.

His eyes lit on me with a sensual smile. “You look beautiful, ma cherie.”

My cheeks warmed. I’d self-combust if he didn’t tone down the sexual charm. “Kristen, remember?”

He opened the passenger door for me with such natural grace, it didn’t clock until I was ensconced on the plush leather seat. He’d opened the door for me. I wasn’t supposed to like it, right? I mean…never mind, it’s okay. I have excuses. Kain’s ageless mannerisms. His swanky car. First date rules.
